Escherichia coli, also known as colibacillus and abbreviated as E. coli, is a Gram-negative bacterium found in the intestines of mammals. Generally harmless and naturally present in the intestine, an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota can promote the emergence of pathogenic strains and cause colibacillosis.
